John Doleman, born about 1776 in Bilston, Staffordshire was working as a chape filer at age 75. Never having heard of a chape before, I had to investigate further and have now concluded that he filed metal buckles. I learn something new every day through my genealogy research.
An interesting find by a Scottish cousin prompts me to ask whether anyone knows what a “hosiery viewer” actually did to earn his crust. It conjures up amusing images, but I have no doubt it was a serious occupation. We found our “hosiery viewer” Thomas Winning born about 1874 in the 1911 census in Wandsworth, London.
