Children of Joseph Hall of Elsdon and Eleanor Thompson of Rothbury

I have now confirmed by viewing microfilm of the parish records that my 4x great grandparents Joseph Hall and Eleanor Thompson had 7 sons and 3 daughters. A full list of their children with baptism dates can be found on my Hall page.

(This is my catch-up post for Tuesday 3rd April when I missed my postaday)

Status on plans from March 20

In planning my Easter holiday I listed up 8 items to follow up at the Northumberland Archives or NDFHS. After three trips to Woodhorn I can now report that I have worked on 5 of the listed items, but only one of them can now be crossed off as complete. On the plus side I have eliminated some options from my other enquiries and I discovered that some of the records I was reviewing to answer the questions had additional information that was useful, so I spent more time on those records rather than hopping over to the next question.

The one item I have successfully cleared from the list is checking that I had documented the correct father for 3x great grandmother Margery Hall born 1803 in Elsdon, Northumberland. I had conflicting information from two different transcription sources giving her father as Joseph and John. I have now reviewed the microfilm of the church records and confirmed that her parents were Joseph Hall of Elsdon and Eleanor Thompson of Rothbury parish.

Planning next archive trip

I have been doing some planning this evening for my next trip to Woodhorn Archives and NDFHS at Percy House. Among the checks I want to make if I have time are:

  • Confirm the correct father for Margery Hall born 1803 in Elsdon, Northumberland, since we have found conflicting information in various transcripts
  • Try to confirm which Isabella Cracket married Garnet Caisley
  • Integrity check on the various Adam Cracket and David Cracket births and marriages in the early 1800s. I think I may have some errors in  my data.
  • Take a closer look at the Olivers of Netherton and Hauxley
  • Try to find a marriage record for Thomas Oliver born 1800 in Hepscott and his wife Alice
  • Try to find parents for Robert Parkinson born 1792, probably somewhere around the Walker area.
  • Look for a marriage record for William Reay born 1776, possibly somewhere around the Walker area
  • Look for a marriage record for Thomas Carr born 1815 in Willington and Ellen Reed (Reid or Read) born 1822 and try to find her parents

Ambitious plans, and if previous experience is anything to go by, I will no doubt get sidetracked onto something completely different but equally useful.

Elsdon parish transcripts

A useful link for anyone researching Elsdon in Northumberland is The Register of Baptisms, Marriages & Burials solemnized in the Ancient Parish Church of Elsdon in the County of Northumberland from A.D. 1672 to AD. 1812, Transcribed by the Reverend Thomas Stephens, Vicar of Horsley, Redesdale. This has helped me with my Hall research.

Hall of Elsdon

Tonight I have established a page under My family for my Hall ancestors. 3x great grandmother Margery Hall and her father Joseph Hall grew up in the remote village of Elsdon in Northumberland. Joseph takes me back to 1767. I need to take a closer look to see if I can find his parents and to see if Margery was an only child or had siblings.
